What are the benefits of joining the LGPS?

Joining the LGPS is one of the best ways to plan for retirement with an excellent range of benefits that include:

Immediate benefits:

  • Life cover from the moment you join

  • Cover for your family with a pension for your spouse, civil partner or children if you die

After 3 months:

  • Immediate benefits at any age if you retire due to permanent ill health

  • When you are aged 55 or over your employer may agree to you retiring early

  • If you leave before your benefits are due they will be frozen or you can take them with you to a 'new' pension provider.

When you retire:

  • A pension for life that increases in line with inflation (RPI)

  • A tax free lump sum if you want one
